This is a two day course aimed at ecologists who are already trained and qualified in Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue (City and Guilds NPTC Level 2) for the inspection of bird nests and potential bat roosts.
This is aimed at ecologists who for whatever reason have not had sufficient opportunities, experience or confidence in their climbing abilities who wish to practice and gain more experience and confidence in their abilities in a safe and controlled environment.
During the course, you will go through the safety implications of climbing, assessing a tree for climbing, the benefits of a competent grounds person, different technique for attaching your anchor points, practice and expand on your existing climbing abilities, practice aerial rescue, use of an endoscope in a tree.
The trainers are experienced tree climbers with over 20 years of combined experience including a level 2 bat licence holder. The event will be held in a private woodland located in North Shropshire near Whitchurch with a mix of pine and broadleaved trees including 5 known species of bat within the woodland.
· Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue qualification (City and Guilds NPTC Level 2).

· LOLER inspection record for your equipment.
9:00 – 10:00 - Safety (housekeeping, risk assessment, briefing, inspection of equipment)
10:00 – 11:00 - Assessing your tree to climb (is the tree safe to climb, where to safely anchor)
11:00 – 12:00 - The use of a prusik, zigzag, foot ascender, hand ascender
12:00 – 13:00 - Lunch
13:00 – 13:30 - The use of a proficient grounds person
13:30 – 16:30 - Practice climbing (different techniques to install and anchor your ropes, practice climbing on some easier trees)
8:30 – 10:30 - Aerial rescue training (this is for the likely rescue scenarios that ecologists will encounter, not tree surgery rescue scenarios)
10:30 – 12:00 - Climb more technically difficult trees (expand on your skills and experience)
12:00 - 13:00 - Lunch
13:00 – 16:00 - Climb more technically difficult trees including the use of an endoscope
Food and drink will be provided in the form of a lunch time BBQ using charcoal produced within the woodland. Tea, coffee, biscuits and water will also be provided. There is accommodation on site in the form of camping pitches for tents for an extra charge of £25 per night per tent. (Only room for four tents). Camping is also available the night before the training if required.
